What is a Buzzword?

Buzzword definition: buzzword is a phrase that becomes popular for a period of time; typically industry jargon adopted from existing or invented words.

Buzzwords are objectively neither bad nor good. But, organizations and consumers may subjectively decide whether a buzzword is acceptable or unacceptable.

It is considered good practice to avoid (or reduce the number of) buzzwords as they are words that sound good but say little to the reader.

Common buzzwords are:

  • Artisan
  • Clear goal
  • Going forward
  • Leverage
  • Reach out
  • Synergy
  • Win-win

There are people who consider buzzwords to be necessary for business and marketing and can be considered part of a business language that we all understand.
